SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

DANGEROUS TALK – FROM RED STATE:  Well, so much for that whole unity thing. Democrats are out for blood, emboldened by the idiotic alt-right fools who rushed the Capitol last week, and they are seemingly going to play every card they have. Impeachment is already being talked about, perhaps even after Biden’s inauguration, in order to ban Trump from ever holding office again. But if that wasn’t dumb enough, Nancy Pelosi is now looking at the 14th Amendment as a way to expel Republican members of the House for supposedly taking part in an “insurrection.”   Do not ignore this.  The Democratic Party, with the full support of institutions like CNN, is going crazy.  They will make a mockery of any talk of national unity, they will ruin Joe Biden's inauguration, just to satisfy their radical base.  Indeed, they will push Biden aside at the first opportunity. 

I GUESS NO ONE NOTICED – FROM THE NEW YORK POST:    A Chicago man who killed three people as he randomly shot eight strangers had posted a series of disturbing videos — in which he vowed to “blow up the whole community.”  Jason Nightengale, 32, appeared to randomly pick out targets Saturday as he shot dead a Chinese exchange student, a female security guard and a 20-year-old customer in a store he robbed, police said at a news briefing.  He also left at least five others critically injured, including elderly women aged 81 and 77 as well as a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the head while with her mother, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said.  His bloodbath lasted almost four hours and stretched over more than 10 miles before he was shot dead in a gun battle with cops after taking a woman hostage at an IHOP in Evanston, police said.  I guess his online posts weren't sufficiently upsetting to attract attention.  After all, we must understand his pain.

WILL THE DEMS SELF-DESTRUCT? – AT 1:20 P.M. ET:  The Democrats, symbolically wearing the neck scarves of the Japanese Kamikaze, plan to impeach President Trump this week, several days before he leaves office.   What a brilliant idea.  What a way to "unite" the country.  From the astute Michael Goodwin at the New York Post: 

One of President Trump’s biggest flaws is not knowing when to stop, as his speech before the Capitol invasion demonstrated. But while he thankfully saved his worst mistake for last, Democrats are exhibiting the same flaw at the very start of their term.

Political winds rarely get more favorable for a party than they are now, with Dems winning control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. Joe Biden will get the Cabinet and judges he wants and the path is open to tax and regulatory overhauls. Media handmaidens will cheer his every move.

Equally important, the post-Trump Republican Party is in shambles after an absolutely disastrous week. White House and agency officials are jumping ship to distance themselves from the president they served and GOP members of Congress as well as donors and supporters are blasting Trump for the loss of the two Senate seats in Georgia as well as the fatal storming of the Capitol.

In short, Dems have it all — except the good sense to be gracious in victory. Celebrating their golden moment with anger and revenge, they are the definition of sore winners.

With less than two weeks remaining in Trump’s term, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer vow to impeach him if VP Mike Pence doesn’t organize a 25th Amendment posse to force him from office. By Friday, ­Pelosi’s team had drawn up articles accusing the president of “inciting an insurrection” and plan to introduce them to the full House ­Monday.

Pelosi even asked Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley to reject orders from the commander in chief, saying she wants Milley to stop “an unstable president from initiating military hostilities or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike.”

Keyboard warriors on the left also flew into action, demanding that Facebook and other Big Tech overlords shame, silence and banish Trump and his “complicit” supporters. Instantly, the cancel-culture goons delivered as numerous platforms suspended or ended Trump accounts, including Twitter, putting the president’s 88.5 million followers in the dark.

Meanwhile, Iran’s mad mullah and other global gangsters continue to be exempt from the same rules.

Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, the first Republican senator to say he would object to the Electoral College results, had his book canceled by publisher Simon & Schuster just five months before publication. The title is “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” so Hawley might want to add a chapter on the tyranny of “woke” publishers.

In a sign of corporate cravenness, Simon & Schuster said that while “it will always be our mission to amplify a variety of voices and viewpoints . . . we cannot support Senator Hawley after his role in what became a dangerous threat.”

Ah, yes, a dangerous threat. Hawley didn’t smash windows or break furniture in the Capitol or loot and burn private businesses over the summer. But he did exercise his First Amendment rights and constitutional duty as he saw it as a United States senator, so he is too toxic to publish.

Punishment for speech doesn’t get any more obvious, a sign that a top publishing house’s reverence for the First Amendment is no greater than that of your average college snowflake.

ANOTHER DEMOCRATIC PARTY INTELLECTUAL – FROM THE NEW YORK POST:   A New York lawmaker from Queens is getting big blowback for tweeting that since Wednesday’s Capitol riots, the 9/11 attack is no longer his most frightening memory.  “Seeing the Twin Towers crumble is no longer the most frightening moment of my life,” tweeted state Sen. John Liu (D-Queens).  The tweet, which Liu sent at 4:26 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, as the Washington, D.C., riot unfolded, is still being blasted as tone-deaf days later.  “Tell that to the families of those who died that day,” responded @CatalinaLauf.  “And to the men and women still suffering, being killed by the Global War on Terror as a result of that day. Truly shameful.”
“C’mon, man,” snarked @michaelsmass.  “You were this close to being indicted for campaign finance fraud,” he added, referencing the then-city comptroller’s brush with the law in 2014, during his failed run for mayor. “I imagine that was a bit more harrowing.”  Many critics of Liu’s tweet noted the utter destruction of 9/11.  Sadly, this is pretty much the level of comment we're getting from Democrats.  Children.  Little children.

TRUE AMERICAN HEROES – FROM DAILYWIRE:  On Friday, a watch company released a video promoting the American ideal of freedom.  Egard Watches has generated buzz twice before with its videos — one in response to Gillette’s ad regarding “toxic masculinity,” and another defending police officers during the height of the “Defund the Police” movement.  The company’s latest video comes at a time when our personal independence is being undermined at a frightening pace.  “What is freedom?” the video, narrated by Egard owner Ilan Srulovicz, begins. “Is it allowing others to decide what’s best for you while this is how they live their lives?”  As the question is posed, a news story about how lockdown isolation negatively impacts the elderly is juxtaposed with the now infamous photo of California Governor Gavin Newsom dining with a group of people at the wildly expensive French Laundry restaurant.  A Gallup poll number showing that a large percentage of Americans blame the media for our political divide is displayed as Srulovicz states that we are not defined by our skin color, gender, or any other immutable characteristic, but by our “individuality, by our very soul, created under God as divine and unique.”  He continues, noting that we, as Americans, determine our fate and that we have a right to make choices despite risk.  The video then contrasts the ongoing wave of legacy news and big tech censorship with our right to free expression before cutting to multiple clips of political leaders and news anchors condoning or encouraging the summer riots and making outlandish claims.  I wonder how long this watch company will be allowed to stay in business.

REASON VERSUS MADNESS – AT 6:05 P.M. ET:  The Democrats plan to move on impeachment in the House of Representatives Monday, only nine days before President Trump's term ends.  It is a despicable political show, with no dignity or respect for the Constitution.  The same Democrats who stood silent in the face of mass violence in American cities now cry crocodile tears over a single, foolish act of pseudo-rebellion.  And might I add, we aren't even sure of the loyalties of many of the "rebels."

Now some Republicans are stepping forward with responsible, mature ideas to try to calm the waters.  But the Democrats aren't interested.  From Bloomberg: 

A group of House Republicans who voted to accept President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory asked him to persuade Speaker Nancy Pelosi to back off impeaching Donald Trump for instigating Wednesday’s riot at the U.S. Capitol.

The lawmakers, led by Representative Ken Buck of Colorado, warned in a letter to Biden on Saturday that Trump’s impeachment would inflame his supporters anew, and damage Biden’s efforts to unify the country.

“In the spirit of healing and fidelity to our Constitution, we ask that you formally request that Speaker Nancy Pelosi discontinue her efforts to impeach President Donald J. Trump a second time,” they wrote.

Pelosi has threatened to allow impeachment proceedings to begin, perhaps as soon as Monday, unless Trump resigns following the insurrection at the Capitol. Many members of Congress in both parties have blamed Trump for the violence after he summoned supporters to Washington to protest while Congress counted Electoral College votes, and then urged them to march on the Capitol in a defiant speech on Wednesday morning.

Five people died in the violence that ensued after Trump’s supporters stormed into the building, including a Capitol Police officer.

But the Republican House members said that “a presidential impeachment should not occur in the heat of the moment, but rather after great deliberation.”

They added that impeachment “would undermine your priority of unifying Americans, and would be a further distraction to our nation at a time when millions of our fellow citizens are hurting because of the pandemic and the economic fallout.”

Biden said in a news conference on Friday that it was up to Congress to decide whether to impeach Trump, but that the fastest way to remove the president would be his own inauguration on Jan. 20. He said he wanted Congress ready the day he’s sworn in to address his agenda, led by new measures to curb the pandemic and stimulate the economy.

Representative Ted Lieu of California says more than 180 Democratic members of the House have signed onto an Article of Impeachment to be introduced Monday charging that Trump should be removed from office for inciting an insurrection.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a letter to colleagues late Friday that it would require unanimous agreement by all 100 senators to begin a trial before Jan. 19, the day before Trump leaves office. A few Republican senators, however, have said the president deserves to be removed, and convicting Trump after he leaves office could prevent him from running for president again.

“I do think the president committed impeachable offenses,” Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said Saturday on Fox News.

COMMENT:  The wisest course would be to allow the president to finish the term to which he was elected.  We have plenty of time to examine the events of the last week, and also examine the frustrations and sense of betrayal that led up to those events.  But the transition to a new administration should proceed with some class, and without the show-business mentality that seems to dominate Washington these days.
